What to Expect: Post Injection
Common Effects After Injection
- Numbness, weakness, or tenderness in the arm or leg is normal and due to the anesthetic. These symptoms should improve within a few hours.
- Local tenderness at the injection site is common. Apply ice for 20 minutes, 3-4 times a day, and rest. Over-the-counter medications like Tylenol (Acetaminophen), ibuprofen (Advil), or naproxen (Aleve) can help manage mild discomfort.
- Mild swelling or redness at the site is normal. If the area becomes raised, significantly red, or very tender, please contact our office.
Steroid-Specific Reactions
- If steroid (cortisone) was used, it may take several days to relieve symptoms.
- It is normal for pain to increase for 1-2 days before improving.
- Temporary side effects can include facial flushing or insomnia. Benadryl may help. These symptoms usually resolve within a few days.
Post-Injection Care
- Do not submerge the injection site in standing water (hot tubs, bathtubs, pools) for 24 hours to reduce infection risk.
- You may resume any medications that were paused for the injection.
- If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar levels closely for 2-3 days, as steroids can temporarily elevate blood sugar. Notify your diabetes care provider if needed.
